Our new Hampton by Hilton hotel in Bath is now open! So we thought now would be a good time to introduce you to its General Manager, Angela Humble.

We asked Angela a few questions about the hotel and the local community. Here’s what she had to say:

What’s the role of a general manager?

In relation to pre-opening – it was to make a plan, including items to procure, review and implement team structure, recruitment, arrange services and licences, uniforms, etc. Then train the team, clean, set and prepare the hotel including washing all cutlery crockery, towels, make the beds, etc.

How long had you been working on the project prior to opening?

I started on the 5th October.

What are the visions and goals of Hampton by Hilton Bath City Centre?

To create a culture within the team to ensure we are an all-inclusive environment and each Team Member has a real sense of belonging. To give genuine hospitality to our guests so that have a great stay and enjoy the Hamptonality.

How has the hotel been received by the wider community?

Really positively, our local Mayoress June opened the hotel saying how delighted she was to have us new to the area. Lots of locals popping in to have a look round and a great response from local businesses wishing to partner with us, we honestly couldn’t be made to feel more welcome, we have already had some work experience from our neighbours Bath College!

How has the design of the building been incorporated into the larger unesco world heritage site?

The site is situated in an area of Bath which has suffered severely from the bombing raids of the Second World War and insensitive subsequent development. Few historic buildings survive and, in this area, the character of the Bath Conservation area and the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the City of Bath World Heritage Site have been significantly eroded. The existing college building on the site, the Allen Building detracts from both the conservation area and the World Heritage Site.

The proposals will result in a more appropriate building for the area. Due to the careful nature of the proposed design, the new hotel will improve the local streetscape, the public realm, and the views from the hills using the following techniques:

• A central light well to articulate the appearance of the roof, and no protruding rooftop plant
• Façade designs which respond to their immediate context and to the high-quality architecture of the city
• Appropriate materials
• Thoughtful interaction with the street and improving the public realm

In conclusion, demolishing the Allen building and creating the new boutique hotel will improve and enhance this area of the Bath Conservation Area and will have modularly beneficial impact on the appreciation of the OUV of the World Heritage Site.

Do you have any favourite local sports close to the hotel or areas of interest you’ve explored since moving to the area?

I never get tired of walking through Alexander Park and taking in the view of the Royal Crescent. Only last week I was walking the streets and past the fashion museum where they recently filmed Bridgerton. I also love sitting in Parade gardens with a picnic in the summer watching the water falling over the weir. I can’t wait to get a visit in to The Thermae Bath Spa and looking forward to the Cleveland lido being reopened later this year!
